JINCHEON, May 17 (Korea Bizwire) — Jincheon County Office will release 120kg of loaches to eradicate mosquitoes in an eco-friendly way.
An average loach is known to eat more than 1,000 mosquito larvae, and the county office started to release loaches into streams and reservoirs in the county last year.
As the office in Chungcheongbuk-do has confirmed that natural pest control has been effective, it released 30kg of loaches into Baekgok Stream on May 15. It will soon release 120kg of loaches into 10 reservoirs and swamps.
Loaches consume mosquito larvae, and can survive even in waters with very poor water quality. Even releasing 4 to 6 loaches for a 1㎡ site is known to be effective.
A county official said that the office has been very happy with results from last year, and will also pursue research about mosquito larvae to get more exact dates for results.
Jincheon County will also prepare 5 teams for disinfection at 285 towns in the county.
