SEOUL, Dec. 13 (Korea Bizwire) – Coupang announced on December 12 the launch of a “Safety Mark” system to help customers identify official communications from the company and prevent phishing scams.
The Safety Mark will appear on text messages sent from Coupang’s official customer service number (1577-7011) and includes the company’s logo, a shield symbol with a checkmark, and the phrase “Verified Sender.”
The mark, developed in collaboration with the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), the Ministry of Science and ICT, and telecommunications providers, is designed to be tamper-proof and will initially be available on Android devices, with plans to expand to iOS devices.
Rising Phishing Threats
The initiative comes in response to a surge in fraudulent messages impersonating Coupang’s customer service or employees. Scammers have been sending texts with misleading subject lines such as “Coupang Sales Department” or “Coupang Marketplace” to lure recipients into clicking on unverified links or participating in fake promotions, often requesting payments or personal information.
Other scams have included fraudulent investment advice, disaster relief requests, and offers for exclusive part-time job opportunities under the guise of Coupang.
Strengthening Security Measures
Coupang is actively working with law enforcement to address phishing cases and has sought to block scam messages originating from overseas. The company emphasized its commitment to customer safety and privacy through the new feature.
“We are leading efforts to create a secure communication environment with innovations like the Safety Mark,” said Brett Mattison, Coupang’s Chief Information Security Officer. “Protecting our customers’ safety and personal information remains our top priority.”
