Customers in Their 30s Lead Imported Automobile Market

SEOUL, Jan. 28 (Korea Bizwire)The majority of the customers looking for imported cars are in their 30s, a recent study has showed.

The Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association reported that among 244,780 cars sold in the imported car market, 153,677 cars were sold to private individuals.

Among them, customers in their 30s comprised 33 percent (50,645 cars) of total sales, followed by those in their 40s (31.7 percent, 48,709 cars) and 50s (19.6 percent, 30,161 cars).

Customers in their 20s and 30s purchased the highest number of BMW models, accounting for 26.1 percent (2,340 cars) and 24.3 percent (12,299 cars) in the total sales of each age group.

On the other hand, customers in their 40s mostly picked Mercedes-Benz as their model of choice (25.2 percent, 12,257 cars), followed by BMW (17.3 percent, 8,407 cars).

Customers in their 50s and 60s both showed strong preference for Mercedes-Benz.

Out of 30,161 imported cars sold to customers in their 50s, 8,762 cars (29.1 percent) were from Mercedes-Benz. BMW accounted for less than half (12.3 percent, 3,697 cars).

Among 12,345 cars sold to customers in their 60s, 34.4 percent (4,248 cars) were from Mercedes-Benz, followed by BMW (10.4 percent, 1,285 cars).

“BMW and Mercedes-Benz are more popular among the younger and older generations, respectively, as reflected in the survey,” said a source familiar with the industry.
