Hong Kong, Oct. 30, 2019 (Korea Bizwire) — Hong Kong Cyberport brought 10 start-ups to participate in the Digital Thailand Big Bang 2019, an annual flagship event organised by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society in Bangkok from 28 to 31 October. Today, Cyberport jointly organised Innospace Cyberport Demo Day with its Thai partner, Innospace.
InnoSpace is dedicated to facilitating start-up development in Thailand. Demo Day at the Digital Thailand Big Bang is the largest collaboration project between the two parties since they signed a Memorandum of Understanding in February this year. Demo Day gave start-ups from both Hong Kong and Thailand a platform to pitch their solutions to participants from Thailand and all over the world. One-to-one business matchings were arranged for start-ups to connect with potential partners, clients and investors, and to help Hong Kong’s start-ups expand their businesses into Thailand and other ASEAN markets.
Thai and Hong Kong start-ups pitch to potential partners and investors
Dr Kobsak Pootrakool, Deputy Secretary – General to the Prime Minister for Political Affairs of Thailand, delivered the opening speech at Demo Day. A Thai venture capital expert and Cyberport Chief Public Mission Officer Eric Chan then shared on the start-up ecosystem developments in Thailand and Hong Kong, respectively. After that, five Thai and five Cyberport start-ups pitched their innovative projects to Thai corporates and investors. The participating Cyberport start-ups were CoverGo which provides an insurance product comparison platform; Riskflo which engages in financial technology, BAM Fintech which focuses on stock analysis, P-Sense which develops Wi-Fi sensors, and Origami Labs which innovated smart rings with body conduction technology.
With the strong business network of InnoSpace, a myriad of well-known Thai corporations including Bangkok Bank, Siam Commercial Bank and other renowned banks in Thailand, Thai Beverage and representatives from the aviation, telecom, catering, energy and health industries, were invited. A one-to-one business-matching session was organised and enabled start-ups to further elaborate their ideas to investors in order to explore investment opportunities and partnership.
Eric Chan, Chief Public Mission Officer of Cyberport, said, “The first InnoSpace Cyberport Demo day was a great success. It allowed our Hong Kong start-ups to understand and explore Thailand and the ASEAN markets, capturing the potential business opportunities brought by the Belt and Road Initiative. Meanwhile, we welcome InnoSpace start-ups to leverage our platform as a digital technology hub to support their business development in Hong Kong, and to facilitate their entry into the Mainland market. Cyberport looks forward to working closely with InnoSpace in the future.”
Tevin Vongvanich, Chairman of the Advisory Committee of InnoSpace (Thailand) said: “Cyberport’s efforts in nurturing young entrepreneurs have won acclaim and make a good reference for InnoSpace. We will continue to strengthen bilateral cooperation in supporting start-ups and their expansion into overseas markets. On the other hand, Cyberport’s enterprises and investors networks provide opportunities for Thai corporates and investors to capture the growth of its vibrant innovation and technology ecosystem.”
Tapping into ASEAN markets through showcases and visits
In addition to the Demo Day, Cyberport start-ups focusing on FinTech, AI & big data, Wearables & IoT and healthcare showcased their innovative solutions and business models at the Cyberport pavilion at the four-day Digital Thailand Big Bang 2019. They seized the opportunity to seek partnerships with Thai and global investors. Cyberport also arranged a visit to RISE Accelerator to explore opportunities to engage their counterparts and investors around the world and expand their businesses to the ASEAN market.
Marcus Leung-Shea, Co-founder and COO of Origami Labs, who has joined the Cyberport visit to Digital Thailand Big Bang for the second consecutive year, said: “We hope to deepen the connection with our Thai partner this time. On Demo Day, investors from aviation, hotel and property management corporations showed interests in incorporating our technology to improve internal communications and customer service.”
Felix Cheung, CEO of RISKflo said: “With the support from Cyberport, RISKflo successfully connected with the Thai government and investors during the delegation. With this remarkable networking opportunity, we will introduce our innovative solution in Thailand this November by engaging an international bank here. Thai banks and corporations are particularly interested in RISKflo’s RegTech solution and are looking for future cooperation.”
This is the second consecutive year Cyberport has joined the Digital Thailand Big Bang. The mega event is one of the largest digital technology symposiums in Southeast Asia, bringing together the latest technology and providing a platform for start-ups and corporations to enter the ASEAN market.
