DAEGU, Aug. 7 (Korea Bizwire) — Bokdongi, a beloved Asian elephant in Daegu, died last Friday at Dalseong Park Zoo, the city government said Sunday.
The 50-year-old male elephant, weighing 5 tons, was donated by a local business in 1975. It had resided in a local park ever since and had gained immense popularity among local residents.
Starting from June, the elephant had been experiencing paronychia, along with a decrease in stamina due to its advanced age.
Collaborating closely, park authorities and a dedicated team from Seoul Grand Park established a foot-caring facility and sought expert assistance.
Regrettably, during a medical treatment session last Friday, Bokdongi collapsed. Despite zookeepers’ efforts to lift the elephant using cranes, it ultimately passed away.
According to the city government, the average captivity lifespan of an elephant is approximately 40 years.
