SEOUL, April 8 (Korea Bizwire) — Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. said Thursday that it has obtained approval in principle (AIP) for its 70,000 cubic-meter liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carrier from ABS, a U.S. ship quality assurance and risk management company.
AIP for the carrier means a certification agency has reviewed its basic design and confirmed that it meets the agency’s technical requirements and standards for safety.
The carrier is 260 meters long and 44 meters wide, the largest among the LCO2 carriers that have acquired certification from the classification society.
In particular, the ship is designed to cope with various environmental regulations as it is mounted with a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled engine and boasts ample space for the installation of CO2 capture and storage systems.
The certification confirmed that the company’s cargo hold design and cargo management system comply with the International Maritime Organization’s International Code of the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code), the company said.
The world’s fourth-biggest shipbuilder by order backlog is also engaged in the development of new materials for LCO2 storage tanks and new ship design for larger tank storage.
