SEOUL, May 3 (Korea Bizwire)After the coronavirus outbreak, the demand for medical and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)-related workers increased, a state-run think tank said.

The demand for employees who can develop new technology increased on the back of the growing interest in health resulting from population aging and income growth, according to a report released by the Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning.

The report said that the demand for medical and STEM-related workers greatly increased after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The demand for delivery and transport workers also increased thanks to the growth of the e-commerce and delivery industries.

In contrast, the labor demand in the office support area greatly decreased as the pandemic accelerated the digital transformation.

The demand for workers in sales and food service also declined as these areas feature direct contact with customers.

“In the post-COVID-19 era, chances are high that the number of jobs in the areas of customer service, manufacturing and food services will decline, while the number of high-income jobs, including those in the medical and STEM fields will increase,” the report noted.
