Department Stores Scramble to Open Galleries

SEOUL, March 22 (Korea Bizwire)Department store chains are becoming a more likely place to find famous artworks and masterpieces than galleries as they scramble to compete with online shopping malls by offering exclusive offline programs that cannot be provided online.

ALT. 1, a 1160-square-meter exhibition hall, was set up last month on the sixth floor of The Hyundai Seoul, Hyundai Department Store’s new branch that recently opened in Yeouido, Seoul.

The hall is currently hosting a retrospective exhibition of 153 pieces from Andy Warhol, that just came from completing a nationwide tour in Italy.

Lotte World Mall, a giant shopping, dining, entertainment and cultural complex, also set up a 1650-square-meter multipurpose art and culture facility early this month, hosting an exhibition for some 80 artworks by famous graffiti artists from around the world to attract customers in their teens and 20s.

Shinsegae Department Store also runs a gallery and holds special art fairs regularly where artworks can be sold to visitors.
