SEOUL, Jul. 6 (Korea Bizwire) — Life imitates art as Song Hye-kyo and Song Joong-ki of “Descendants of the Sun” fame have not only stepped out as a couple but also announced that they will tie the knot this coming October.
“Descendants of the Sun” centers on the characters of Yoo Shi-jin (Song Joong-ki), a captain in a South Korean Special Forces unit, and Dr. Kang Mo-yeon (Song Hye-kyo), two people with very different views on how to protect people based on their professions. However, they can’t help falling for each other, as the twists and turns in their individual lives eventually have them cross paths one final time in the fictional country of Uruk.
The show was massively popular not only in Korea but in China as well, where Song Hye-kyo had been working before being cast in the drama. Her ageless beauty was a perfect complement to the tall, dark and handsome Song Joong-ki, who was freshly discharged from serving his mandatory Korean military service. Long considered to be a sweet and smiley pretty boy actor, Song showed serious acting chops and won over legions of fans.
As the series progressed, fans of the show began rooting for a real-life pairing of the two actors, even dubbing them the “Songsong Couple”, a nod to their shared last name. These sentiments were no doubt inflamed as reports of the “Songsong Couple” shopping New York and relaxing in Bali together hit tabloids.
The 32-year-old actor and 35-year-old actress had continuously denied they were in a relationship, insisting that any meeting was mere coincidence. However, they finally came clean yesterday by releasing an official statement.
When asked why it had taken so long for the two to go public, a publicist replied that “since marriage is a bonding not only of two individuals, but of two families, my clients wanted to ensure that they did not commit any action that might cause any offense to anyone.”
Preparing for his coming nuptials has not deterred Song Joong-ki in his professional life, as his next movie “Battleship Island” is slated for release near the end of this month. Some have speculated that the timing of the announcement might have been made with an eye on boosting the movie’s viewership.
