SEOUL, Jan. 19 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean builder DL E&c Co. and nuclear plant components maker Doosan Enerbility Co. announced on Wednesday that they had signed a deal with U.S. small modular reactor (SMR) maker X-energy to make an equity investment and to supply core equipment.
SMRs refer to modules comprised of reactors, steam generators, coolant pumps and pressurizers, which are key components of large-scale nuclear power plants.
X-energy’s high-temperature gas-cooled SMR has a total power generation capacity of 320 megawatts (MW) and consists of four 80 MW nuclear reactor modules.
It uses tennis ball-sized next-generation nuclear fuel that is designed to have higher safety.
The 565 Celsius degree steam heat that is generated during operation can be used not only for power production but also as a heat source for various industries.
DL E&C will invest US$20 million to acquire X-energy convertible bonds. Under the terms of the deal, Doosan Enerbility will make a $5 million equity investment and enter into a supply contract.
“X-energy’s SMR technology can be used for various industries. It is expected to contribute to creating a synergy effect with DL E&C’s plant business,” said You Jae-ho, head of plant business at DL E&C.
