SEOUL, June 14 (Korea Bizwire)It is expected that the volume of digital data to be created in Korea will be 847 billion gigabytes (GB) by 2020. If the volume is stored 12-GB tablets, the height will be 9,640 times taller than Mt. Halla, the highest mountain in South Korea of 1,950 meters.

EMC Korea and market researcher IDC Korea jointly released on June 12 a report surveying on the total digital data created in Korea. According to the report, the total digital data created last year was 93 billion GB, or 2.1 percent of world’s total digital data of 4.4 trillion GB. The volume is expected to rise to 136 billion GB this year and 847 billion GB in 2020.

As for the reasons for the explosive increase in the digital data, EMC Korea picked the development of the Internet of Things technology based on sensors. The report said that the data volume created by the embedded devices connected to the Internet will increase to 10 percent in 2020 from 2 percent in 2013.

※ What Is Digital Data?

Digital data, in information theory and information systems, are discrete, discontinuous representations of information or works, as contrasted with continuous, or analog signals which behave in a continuous manner, or represent information using a continuous function. The word digital comes from the same source as the words digit and digitus (the Latin word for finger), as fingers are often used for discrete counting. (Wikipedia)

Especially, the “Giga Korea Project” aiming at constructing a giga-class mobile infrastructure and to operate 5G mobile telecommunications networks by 2020 is expected to boost the growth in the digital data.

Along with the explosive increase in digital data volume, EMC Korea explained that companies can obtain new chances for their businesses from the selection of high value-added data which are easy to access and can be used in real time and whose analysis results have influential power to change individuals, companies and organizations.

Also, for the effective application of the data, it is essentially needed to set up company-wide data management plans, to introduce next-generation big data solutions and secure the technology of data analysis and management and talented manpower.

An official at EMC Korea said, “Digital data change not only individual life but also corporate business. To apply new chances provided by digital data and to prevent problems, companies need to keep on their business renovation making use of the state-of-the-art technologies.”
