Domestic Films “I Can Speak”, “Memoir of a Murderer” Top Box Office

SEOUL, Sept. 25 (Korea Bizwire)South Korean comedy-drama “I Can Speak” topped the local box office on its opening weekend, attracting over 480,000 moviegoers, according to data released Monday.

The movie starring veteran actress Na Moon-hee and actor Lee Je-hoon sold 486,313 tickets on Saturday and Sunday, closing the two-weekend winning streak for “Memoir of a Murderer,” another homegrown film, according to the computerized box office figures from the Korean Film Council.

“I Can Speak” tells a heartwarming tale of an unlikely friendship between a civil service employee, played by Lee, and Na’s lonely curmudgeon character who regularly hassles workers at the local ward by lodging trivial complaints. They develop a close relationship when Lee’s character ends up teaching English to the lady and learns of her painful past of as former sex slave during Japan’s colonial rule of Korea.

Murder mystery “Memoir of a Murderer” fell to second place, drawing in 168,316 cinemagoers, while Hollywood heist film “Baby Driver” finished third, seen by 121,276 people.

American action-comedy “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” and Tom Cruise’s latest movie “American Made” finished fourth and fifth with 44,030 and 30,887 in attendance, respectively.
