Doosan Heavy to Build S. Korea’s First Liquid Hydrogen Plant

CHANGWON, Nov. 9 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea’s first liquid hydrogen plant, a facility that produces liquid hydrogen, is set to be established.

Power plant builder Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. recently signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) deal for a hydrogen liquefaction project with the South Gyeongsang Provincial Government and the Changwon City Government.

Under terms of the agreement, Doosan Heavy will build a hydrogen liquefaction plant on an EPC basis and carry out maintenance and repair work over the next 20 years.

The South Gyeongsang Provincial Government and the Changwon City Government will provide administrative support for the promotion of the hydrogen liquefaction project, while procuring liquid hydrogen from the plant.

The plant which will be located within on the grounds of Doosan Heavy’s Changwon plant, aims to churn out five tons of liquid hydrogen per day. It is scheduled to be completed by 2022.

The plant’s liquid hydrogen that will be produced from 2023 through commercial operations will be supplied to hydrogen charging stations across the country.

Turning hydrogen into a liquid state can reduce the bulk by a factor of 800, thereby ensuring more convenience in storage and transportation while contributing to lowering the cost of building hydrogen infrastructure.

Liquid hydrogen is also suitable for buses, trucks and trams that need to be recharged with lots of hydrogen.

There are only eight countries in the world that have succeeded in commercializing liquid hydrogen since it requires advanced ultra-low temperature technology.
