SEOUL, June 3 (Korea Bizwire)Democratic Party (DP) floor leader Park Chan-dae said Tuesday that exit polls showing a majority for the party’s presidential candidate, Lee Jae-myung, represented a stern verdict from the people on the “insurrectionist government” of ousted former President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Park made the remark shortly after the exit polls showed Lee was projected to win the election by a wide margin of more than 10 percentage points against his conservative rival Kim Moon-soo.

Lee was projected to garner 51.7 percent of the vote against Kim’s 39.3 percent, according to the exit polls released by three major broadcasters.

“The people have delivered a thunderous judgment against the insurrectionist regime,” he said while appearing on the public broadcaster KBS.

“I believe the public support for Lee reflects their strong desire to recover from the collapse of livelihoods and the runaway economy that have worsened over the past three years under the Yoon government,” he said.

Park said the party will wait until the final call of the election, saying the exit polls are still just projections.

“We will closely watch what the people’s judgment truly brings,” he added.

Watching the exit polls at the National Assembly, DP members burst into cheers as soon as the tentative numbers emerged, with applause and a wave of joy filling the air.

Some of them raised their fists in triumph and repeatedly chanted “Lee Jae-myung!”
