SEOUL, Jan. 3 (Korea Bizwire) – Starting this month, driving restrictions will be imposed on 400,000 aged vehicles in the Seoul Metropolitan Area when airborne concentrations of fine dust reach a critical level.
Seoul announced new legislation that will restrict grade 5 emission vehicles once fine dust emergency measures are declared by the Seoul mayor.
More than 400,000 vehicles over 2.5 tons registered in the Seoul Metropolitan Area will be subject to immediate restrictions as soon as the legislation takes effect on February 15.
An additional 2.67 million diesel cars across the country as well as 30,000 gasoline and LPG vehicles will be subject to restrictions starting June 1.
A total of 121 closed circuit cameras installed across the Seoul Metropolitan Area will monitor possible violators, who will be subject to fines of up to 100,000 won (US$88.69).
Postal mail will be delivered to grade 5 car owners during the month of January. Drivers can check the status of their vehicles by contacting a call center (1833-7435) or accessing a website (emissiongrade.mecar.or.kr).
Seoul will prioritize supporting small business owners to take anti-emission maintenance on their grade 5 vehicles or scrap them.
