SEOUL, June 7 (Korea Bizwire) – As drone sales worldwide are forecast to reach 2.5 million units this year, the growing interest in unmanned aerial vehicles in South Korea is seeing a number of drone events take place around the country.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) is holding a competition for 3D river modeling from June 7 to 28 for university students.
Both undergraduates and postgraduates who have an interest in drones can participate in the competition, either as individuals or in groups of up to five people.
Using drones, contenders will be competing in monitoring and recording geographic change, water quality and river maintenance and preservation, based on which an outcome in the form of 3D model will be made and submitted to the event’s review body, with cash prizes as high as 2.5 million won up for grabs for winners.
The Jeonju city government is also holding a drone football match as part of RoboUniverse & K Drone, a business-to-business drone conference that will be held at Kintex later this month.
‘Drone football’ is a type of eSport invented by the Jeonju government in which teams of five drones in the shape of footballs compete against another to earn points by successfully making their way into the opposition’s goal.
As drone football encapsulates cutting-edge technology such as elastic-plastic materials and unmanned aerial vehicles, the mayor of Jeonju is set to speak at the drone conference on the success of the city’s drone football as a new type of eSport.

Gwacheon City in Gyeonggi Province is launching a new event named Drone Day on June 12 in an effort to raise awareness and interest in unmanned aerial vehicles, during which games of drone racing will take place.
As South Korean online shopping malls such as Interpark experience surging drone sales in the summer, a growing number of family outings in the country is likely to see more drone events take place over the next few months.
