GANGNEUNG, July 18 (Korea Bizwire) – From leisure activities to military or industrial purposes, drones have lately become part of everyday life for many people.

For the first time in the country, lifesaving drones will be flying over Gyeongpo Beach on Korea’s eastern coast as part of a pilot project.

The city of Gangneung announced that it will operate ‘drone lifesavers’ at Gyeongpo Beach from July 15 to August 16, peak vacation time when many people flock to one of the most popular vacation places on the east coast of the Korean peninsula.

Drones will hover over the coastal area, keeping watch over beachgoers, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Two drones, one dedicated to scouting and one for actual rescue operations, will be in operation.

Military bodies and other governmental authorities that are responsible for securing protection for civilians have shown keen interest in utilizing drones for lifesaving purposes.

“Visitors can now feel safer when they are spending their vacation time at the beach if they are aware that drones are watching over them from above. We hope this practice will contribute to the prevention of accidents,” said Kang Seok-ho, Director of Tourism for Gangneung.
