SEOUL, July 4 (Korea Bizwire) — An elderly couple has donated an air conditioner manufactured by LG Electronics Inc. that functioned normally for 45 years without any issues.
The GA-100SP, which was released in 1979 under the company’s former brand name, Goldstar, became the nation’s first wall-mounted air conditioner.
It featured a design that separated the outdoor unit from the main unit, allowing the wind to come out solely through the wall-mounted main unit.
During that time, the nation’s air conditioner market was predominantly dominated by window-type air conditioners, which integrated the outdoor units with the main bodies.
Therefore, the introduction of a wall-mounted air conditioner was considered an innovation.
“We purchased the air conditioner for our young children, who had to study in the sweltering summer heat,” said Hong Yeon-moo and Moon Hee-seon, a couple residing in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province.
They made the decision to donate it to LG, believing that it held significant historical value.
One of their children, Hong Jae-sung, later became a professor of robotics and mechatronics engineering at the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology.
