Elementary School Students Learning to Distinguish Between Real and Fake News

SEOUL, April 22 (Korea Bizwire)The Ministry of Education said Tuesday it will develop and distribute new educational content to help students develop their “media literacy” capabilities to critically evaluate media reports.

The new content has been created as an auxiliary textbook concept that will be used in Korean language classes for fifth and sixth graders.

Students learn how to judge fake news by critically accepting media reports or YouTube videos through “the world of media that they enjoy wisely.”

Students will also learn the ability to analyze and evaluate social and cultural phenomena delivered through the media on their own.

Elementary school students will also learn how to evaluate information and arguments in the media, why they should protect copyright, portrait rights, and personal information, and how to make vlogs and movies.

The ministry explained that it had developed a program centered on activities such as creating personal content and uploading photos to maintain student interest.

The content will be available on a national teaching-learning center Edunet’s website (https://edunet.net). Students and teachers will be able to access the program on a computer or smartphone.

“We expect to support students’ wise media lives in an era when media consumption has become a daily routine,” a government official said.
