SEOUL, August 4 (Korea Bizwire) – Seoul Grand Park announced that a lynx and a siamang, which are registered on the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) endangered list, have given birth in Korea for the first time.

A siamang (the largest gibbon) currently living at Seoul Grand Park, gave birth to an infant on June 20. This black-furred gibbon is listed in Appendix I of CITES – indicating that they are threatened with extinction.

Earlier in April, a lynx was born at Seoul Grand Park. Lynxes are listed in Appendix II of CITES. Seoul Grand Park imported a pair of lynx from a zoo in North Korea in 2005, but has failed to breed new offspring. In 2014, Seoul imported another pair from a zoo in the Czech Republic.

The newborns will be under the care and protection of their mothers for several weeks. Seoul Grand Park Zoo plans to release the newborns into an enclosure in mid-August.

“An Asian elephant calf was born at the end of June, and two endangered species also gave birth at Seoul Grand Park. We will work to protect and nurture endangered species to serve our primary purpose as a zoo,” said Song Chun-heon, director of Seoul Grand Park.
