SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Korea Bizwire)Errand running services are gaining popularity among those who hesitate to go outside, as the coronavirus outbreak continues unabated.

The so-called ‘errand runners’ receive task orders directly through mobile apps or affiliated platforms.

Through the app, users ask them to carry out various errands such as delivering documents or sending personal gifts.

“The number of orders has been on a constant increase since early this year when the coronavirus first broke out. Demand, however, more than tripled after stricter social distancing measures came into place,” a local errand service platform said.

Some have raised concerns that errand runners may end up responsible for the obstruction of quarantine efforts as demand rises, since they carry the risk of spreading the coronavirus as they have to visit multiple places to complete their assigned tasks.

“It is crucial for delivery drivers to strictly follow quarantine restrictions when they visit large-sized shopping malls, as more people are being infected with the coronavirus,” said Kim Woo-joo, a professor for infectious diseases at Korea University in Seoul.

Errand runners are concerned about their working conditions as well.

“I never take my protective mask off because I’m worried that I might get infected while at work,” said a 31-year-old errand runner surnamed Kim.

Officials argue that the demand for errand runners will continue to rise until the coronavirus outbreak is contained.
