SEJONG, Dec. 2 (Korea Bizwire) – Exports of South Korean green tea soared 64.6 percent in the first 10 months of the year from a year earlier on the back of rising demand from Asia and Europe, customs data showed Friday.
A total of US$3.67 million worth of green tea was shipped abroad in the January-October period, up from $2.23 billion tallied in the same period last year, according to the data compiled by the Korea Customs Service.
It already surpassed last year’s exports of $3.05 million, with the yearly figure expected to hit an all-time high by the end of the year.
The volume also surged 63.9 percent on-year to 135 tons over the cited period.
Singapore was the biggest buyer of South Korean green tea, as it imported $1.5 million over the 10-month period, accounting for 40.7 percent of South Korea’s exports.
Exports to Germany and China reached $640,000 and $450,000, respectively, with the Netherlands purchasing $399,000 worth of South Korean green tea.
The customs agency said South Korean green tea has been gaining popularity in Asia and Europe for its cheap price and high quality.
