SEOUL, Nov. 30 (Korea Bizwire)Smartphones can now be used to select and pay for food at expressway service areas.

The state-run Korea Expressway Corp., which manages South Korea’s highways across the nation, introduced Friday a new contactless ordering service at rest areas in response to the increasing demand for contact-free consumption following the coronavirus outbreak.

Customers can use a smartphone app or scan a QR code located on a restaurant table or a banner to order food. They will no longer have to stand in line or enter into contact with staff, reducing the risk of infection.

The corporation is currently testing the new ordering program at several designated service areas including the Seoul Underground Rendezvous Service Area, Haeng-Dam Island Service Area, and the Pyeongtaek Service Area, aiming to introduce the program to some 90 service areas by the end of this year, and some 150 service areas by the end of next year.
