SANCHEONG, Jan. 18 (Korea Bizwire) — A farming town with populations of less than 40,000 is coming up short in its search for new doctors.
Sancheong County in South Gyeongsang Province sought to recruit doctors specializing in internal medicine in November and December last year for its public health clinic, but there haven’t been any applicants.
In response, the county posted another job opening earlier this month, but there hasn’t been a single inquiry.
The job comes with a renewable two-year contract, and an annual salary of 360 million won (US$289,710).
Sancheong Health Center and County Hospital is frequently visited by local residents, but the lack of medical staff specializing in internal medicine has been undermining the hospital’s capacity to provide proper treatment to residents.
The lack of doctors is a result of medical students avoiding specializing in internal medicine or emergency medicine, coupled with the concentration of medical staff in the greater Seoul area.
