SEOUL, May 1 (Korea Bizwire) — Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok tendered his resignation late Thursday just before the National Assembly reported a motion to impeach him.
“Deputy Prime Minister Choi submitted his resignation at 10:28 p.m.,” the Ministry of Economy and Finance said in a press release.
The impeachment motion, spearheaded by the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), accused Choi — who was then serving as acting president — of delaying the appointment of the ninth justice to the Constitutional Court, among other allegations.
Choi had been slated to take over as acting president starting at midnight Thursday, following the resignation of outgoing acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who is expected to run for the presidential election in June.
