First Military e-Sports Championship Coming to Inje County

INJE, Mar. 13 (Korea Bizwire)The 2019 Military Amateur e-Sports Championship will be held in Inje County, Gangwon Province in May and June of this year.

Inje County announced on Tuesday that it had been selected as the first location to host a military amateur e-Sports championship.

The county will be investing as much as 500 million won (US$442,100) to host the championship.

E-Sports were featured at the 2018 Asian Games as a demonstration sport and will be an official medal sport at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, garnering massive popularity among younger generations.

The South Korean military seeks to turn e-Sports into a new cultural asset that can be used to stimulate local economies as well as provide leisure to military personnel.

“League of Legends” and “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” will be the two main sports events at the championship.

The two games have been selected based on their popularity worldwide as well as on military bases. Both games are made in South Korea. Some 200 military personnel will be participating in the finals.

“The championship will serve as a new platform for cultural content as well as the means to revitalize the tourism industry led by e-Sports,” said Inje County.
