SEOUL, Dec. 28 (Korea Bizwire)Food delivery workers only take five days off every month but make less than 3 million won (US$2,360) in monthly net income, government data showed Tuesday.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport reported that there were 237,188 people in the country working in the food delivery business, twice as many as two years ago.

A survey of 1,200 food delivery workers in six major cities showed that they work an average of 25.3 days every month, earning 3.81 million won.

Excluding the 950,000 won spent on insurance and rental fees, each delivery worker earned 2.86 million won in net income.

The net income was the largest among delivery workers in Seoul (3.14 million won), followed by Incheon (3.06 million won), Gwangju (2.74 million won), Daejeon (2.67 million won), Busan (2.27 million won) and Daegu (2.20 million won).

Each worker made an average of 37.4 deliveries on weekdays, and 42.3 on weekends, traveling 103 kilometers on weekdays and 117 kilometers on weekends.

Among the delivery workers, more than 40 percent had been in a traffic accident in the previous six months.

At 42.8 percent, close to half of the workers said that the traffic accidents were caused by “reckless driving to meet delivery deadlines.”
