SEOUL, Dec. 5 (Korea Bizwire) – Gangnam District has announced plans to introduce IoT-based paper packaging waste recycling bins for the first time in South Korea.

According to the Gangnam District Office on Monday, 53 of the smart paper package recycling bins will be installed at a total of 26 locations within the district, including the district office building, with the proceeds going towards building a park at the end of the year.

“Valuable recycling waste like milk cartons and other paper-based beverage packages are being discarded along with municipal solid waste. We are installing the recycling bins to encourage recycling,” the Gangnam District Office said.

The recycling bins come with an IoT module, allowing smartphone users to scan the barcode of each paper package, the information of which will appear on a mobile app.

A number of paper packages can be recycled at the new smart bin, including milk cartons, beverage cartons, soy milk cartons and soju cartons.

After scanning a barcode and throwing the paper packages into the smart bins, those who join the environmental cause will receive points worth 3,000 won for every 10 packages, which can be exchanged for milk from Maeil Dairies or donated towards a park project which is scheduled to launch later this month.

The Gangnam District Office is set to sign a business agreement with dairy company Maeil Dairies, carton producer Tetra Pak, and IoT platform developer Oyster Able on Tuesday.
