SEOUL, June 27 (Korea Bizwire) Prioritizing efficiency, which involves saving even a few seconds, is becoming a new trend among Generation MZ, a Korean portmanteau for millennials and Gen Z.

Park, a 31-year-old office worker, enjoys watching YouTube videos that provide 10-minute summaries of films or television shows.

“There are numerous things to watch, but I don’t have time for all of them. So, I watch three or four summary videos of films and TV shows each day to save time,” he explained.

For Generation MZ members, efficiency is a common practice, considering the time they’ve spent competing to enter college and find employment.

Kim, a 29-year-old office worker, has increasingly relied on ordering food instead of dining at restaurants on the weekends.

“It has become quite difficult to wait even a few minutes at a restaurant for food. When you order food, you can do other things while waiting for it to be delivered,” Kim said.

However, others express concerns that excessive focus on efficiency may lead to a loss of concentration and tolerance.

“It’s a form of media/content addiction that builds tolerance against less stimulating and slower content,” said Lee Hae-kook, a psychology professor at Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital.

This new trend may be viewed as an adjustment to an era flooded with content to watch, but experts warn of its negative aspects.

“The motivation stems from the desire to consume more engaging content in a short time span. Consumers now have a wider range of options,” said culture critic Kim Seong-soo.

“Today, we cannot expect much tolerance from the public in this era.”
