SEOUL, Sept. 6 (Korea Bizwire) – A colossal red lobster has taken up residence in Seokchon Lake, drawing curious onlookers to this popular recreational area in Seoul’s Songpa district.
The inflatable art installation, measuring 52 feet tall and 100 feet wide, is the work of British pop artist Philip Colbert, known for his playful lobster-themed creations. Unveiled on September 6, the whimsical crustacean sports a Hawaiian shirt and lounges atop an inner tube, greeting visitors with a cheerful demeanor.
This eye-catching display is part of Lobster Wonderland, a public art project organized by the Songpa district office in collaboration with Lotte Property & Development to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Lotte World Mall. The project will run through September 29, transforming the lakeside into a vibrant open-air gallery.
To ensure the artwork can be appreciated around the clock, officials have arranged for nighttime illumination from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. throughout the exhibition period.
The lobster installation marks the latest in a series of floating artworks that have graced Seokchon Lake since 2014. Previous attractions have included the famous “Rubber Duck” by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, as well as “Supermoon,” “Sweet Swan,” “Holiday Korea,” and “Luna Project.”
These installations have consistently drawn crowds and helped establish the area as a cultural hotspot.
Complementing the main lakeside attraction, the outdoor plaza of Lotte World Mall will feature an array of lobster-themed artworks, including additional inflatable sculptures, statues, and photo zones.
These colorful installations promise to add a festive atmosphere to the autumn landscape.
Seo Kang-suk, the mayor of Songpa district, expressed enthusiasm for the project. “Following the Pokémon installation that graced our lake in spring, we now welcome this giant lobster reminiscent of autumn leaves,” he said.
“Visitors can look forward to more diverse cultural events at Seokchon Lake in the future. We invite everyone to enjoy an artistic stroll along our beautiful lakeside.”
