SEJONG, Dec. 16 (Korea Bizwire) - GM Korea and Toyota will recall 1958 cars sold in South Korea for safety-related mechanical defects, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Wednesday.

GM Korea, the South Korean unit of U.S. automaker General Motors Co., said ignition coils on its Veritas full-size sedans have problems that could cause the vehicle to lose power, while it is being driven. The Veritas is the local name for GM’s Chevrolet Caprice.

It said 1,162 cars made from July 15, 2008, through Sept. 3, 2009, had this ignition problem, with repairs to be carried out free of charge starting Friday.

The ministry said Toyota’s RAV4 SUVs have faulty electric wiring on the driver’s side power window that can cause a fire.

It said 796 vehicles made between Feb. 27, 2009, and April 28, 2010, are affected, with the Japanese carmaker to start repairs Thursday. Both the front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions of the compact SUV are affected.

“Notification will be made by the carmakers, with car owners who have already gotten repairs to be fully reimbursed,” the ministry said.
