SEOUL, April 1 (Korea Bizwire)GM Korea Co. said on Friday it sold more than 9,000 units of the Chevrolet Spark mini car in March, the strongest monthly performance since its domestic debut in October 2002.

The sales jumped by more than 80 percent from 4,889 units a month earlier.

“The robust sales were driven by the company’s nationwide promotional and marketing activities that included discount and test-drive programs,” a GM Korea spokesman said.

In the domestic market, the Chevy Spark competes with the Morning of Kia Motors Corp. and sells at 10 million won-15 million won (US$8,700-$13,000). Kia’s Morning carries a similar price tag.

As Kia plans to launch an all-new version of the Morning later this year, sales of the Spark model, launched in July last year, are expected to remain strong in the coming months.

Detroit-based General Motors Co. owns a 77 percent stake in GM Korea, the country’s third-biggest carmaker by sales after Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia.

GM Korea, which also has models, such as the Impala large-size sedan and the Malibu midsize sedan and the Cruze compact, aims to sell a total of 191,000 autos this year, up from 158,000 a year earlier.
