Golf Courses Surge in Number, Rising as a Major Source of Water Pollution

SEOUL, June 14 (Korea Bizwire)Among major emitters of wastewater in the country, golf courses have jumped in number over the last 10 years.

The National Institute of Environmental Research reported that as of 2020, more than 4.8 million tons of wastewater were being released from 54,870 locations in the country each day.

The amount was 87,000 tons more than in 2019, and 387,000 tons less than in 2010.

The number of livestock farms stood at 194,665, down by 3,564 from 2019. The number of livestock stood at 247.1 million, down by 44.9 million.

139,753 tons of animal excrement were produced each day as of 2020 , down by 13,467 tons from 2019, according to the Ministry of Environment.

Other sources of water pollution such as junkyards and jewelry workshops are dwindling in number. The number of golf courses, in contrast, is surging as ‘golf fever’ sweeps across the country.

There were 516 golf courses in the country as of 2020, up by six since 2019 and by 188 since 2010.

There were 318 golf courses in 2011, which jumped to 435 in 2012 and 501 in 2017.
