Government Aims to Make “Smart Construction” Possible by 2030

SEOUL, Nov. 1 (Korea Bizwire)The South Korean government has established plans to create a system that utilizes smart construction technology by 2025 and to implement an automated construction system by 2030.

This is according to the “smart construction technology roadmap” drawn up by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Smart construction incorporates conventional civil engineering practices with the latest cutting-edge technology such as building information modeling (BIM), Internet of Things (IoT), big data, drones and robots.

The combination of technology would allow drones to capture images of construction sites above ground to swiftly and accurate calculate land measurements automatically.

In addition, it will become possible to complete dangerous construction tasks remotely.

Although other advanced nations such as the U.K. and Japan are picking up the pace in developing smart construction technologies, experts say local construction companies are lagging behind on this front.

Through the roadmap, therefore, the ministry set the direction of where the future of construction technology should be headed.

A system that will keep track of all information produced during the construction process will be created.

In addition, big data and simulation will be utilized to transform the practice of how information is shared within the industry.

In the construction sector, ICT, drones and robots will be incorporated with other types of technology.

In the design process, digital information models will be equipped with BIM technology and automated planning based on big data will be made possible.
