SEOUL, Sept. 7 (Korea Bizwire) – The National Fisheries Research & Development Institute, under the auspices of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, announced Tuesday that it has developed a drone that can detect red tide and jellyfish, and also collect water for sampling.

According to the NFRDI, although it has been using drones to monitor maritime habitat, previous drones were limited in their ability to monitor and collect water samples from rocky seas or waters close to aquaculture facilities.

The new drone can hover some three meters above the surface of the water, and lower a water sampler that can collect up to one liter of liquid. It also has better battery capacity, allowing for flights of up to 25 kilometers or one hour. The water sampler can be replaced with other equipment depending on the circumstances.

“Our multi-purpose drone will help us confirm the presence of harmful water organisms, quickly grasp the scope of potential oil leaks, and allow us to produce better analysis of water quality,” said Kang Jun-seok, director of the NFRDI. “It’ll let us respond more quickly in various situations.”
