SEJONG, July 21 (Korea Bizwire) – The government said Thursday that it will draw up a 3D map to provide safe roads for drones, in line with the effort to boost the fledgling industry.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it selected a civilian subcontractor that will provide detailed aerial data for the compilation of the 3D map.

Currently, only a 2D map is available for flying drones, raising concerns over possible collisions or casualties.

“The spacial 3D data for drones will contain information such as the height of obstacles, which will eventually make it possible for the drones to fly between obstacles,” said a ministry official on the customary condition of anonymity.

The spacial data will contain detailed 3D mapping of power transmission towers and billboards that hinder the safe flying of drones, the official said.

Designating the drone industry as one with high growth potential, the government earlier decided to expand drone-related projects and increase exclusive drone flight zones.
