SEOUL, Dec. 24 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea has approved an enforcement decree to accelerate the development of autonomous vessels, laying the groundwork for global leadership in the rapidly growing industry, the industry ministry said Tuesday.
The enforcement decree on the act for the development of autonomous vessels was passed during a Cabinet meeting held on the day, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The move comes as South Korea aims to launch full-fledged efforts for the development of autonomous vessels starting next year, with the global market for the industry projected to reach US$180.5 billion by 2032.
“The enforcement decree includes details of the basic development plan for the industry, methods to test technologies and train experts, as well as other supportive measures for the establishment of a maritime logistics system,” the ministry said.
The government said it also plans to take the lead in establishing global industry standards and actively participate in discussions with the International Maritime Organization.
South Korea will also seek to collaborate with major partners, such as the European Union, in the sector, the ministry added.
