SEOUL, Oct. 3 (Korea Bizwire)South Korean government agencies are set to cooperate to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) system that uses big data to identify counterfeit products.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Customs Service recently opened an AI empirical lab to identify illegal counterfeit products at the D-Station of the Daejeon Techno Park in Daejeon.

With a floor space of 288 square meters provided by the Daejeon city government, the empirical lab is furnished with data learning facilities that enable the verification of copycat products with counterfeited product designs.

The AI system that can verify illegal copycats will be developed by combining high-quality data from the Korea Customs Service with the Ministry of Science and ICT’s data learning.

The development of AI that can verify illegal copycats will contribute to protecting local industry by reducing the number of intellectual property infringement cases, which reached 52,000 in 2018.

The local AI industry is also expected to be able to enhance its technological prowess by learning data at the empirical lab.

“Thus far, there have been many cases where Korea’s AI companies have difficulty in securing data due to business confidentiality and privacy issues,” the Korea Customs Service said.

“The empirical lab will contribute to helping AI companies to improve their technology through data learning, while making it easier for them to secure initial markets for their innovative products.”
