SEOUL, Jul. 24 (Korea Bizwire)In order to prevent the misuse of carsharing service vehicles, the government is pushing for a new system that would require users to verify their carsharing ID through a mobile device.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) revealed yesterday that a new verification system that would require carsharing members to book vehicles exclusively via the device used to register their membership is being considered.

According to the current system, anyone with a smartphone can use a parked car at set fees per hour. Users only need to verify their driver’s license upon registration for the service.

Afterwards, a single ID is all that is needed to access and drive one’s vehicle of choice. This is problematic because teenagers who have been granted access to adult IDs have been causing car accidents after driving the shared vehicles.

The government says it will be holding talks with carsharing enterprises such as Socar and Green Car to discuss the possible implementation of the new verification system.

In addition, the ministry plans to put in place new laws to punish those who lend their car-sharing IDs to others.
