SEOUL, March 16 (Korea Bizwire)The government plans to release a variety of sensitive geospatial information, including high-precision aerial photos, 3-dimensional space information, and highly precise road maps to the private sector as part of efforts to support the cultivation of new industries.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that the new Enforcement Ordinance of the National Space Information Basic Law will take effect from Thursday.

The new legislation is a follow-up measure after the National Space Information Basic Law was revised in March last year towards enabling the provision of geospatial information that has been restricted from use in the private sector through security screening.

The ministry said that it eased the regulations to allow the private sector to develop new services using the geospatial information that the government has established in the areas of autonomous driving, augmented reality and virtual reality.

Under the new Enforcement Ordinance, private companies can receive previously restricted geospatial information if they submit security management plans, among others, the prevention of information leakage and the designation of security management officers.

However, when military and national security facility-related information is included, the competent authorities will provide the information after security processing, including the deletion of the information concerned.
