SEOUL, Jan. 6 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s quarantine agency on Monday began accepting applications to find new homes for eight detection dogs relieved of their service duties.
The program focuses on helping retired sniffer dogs, previously deployed at airports and seaports to detect unauthorized entry of livestock and agricultural goods, begin a new life after retirement, according to the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency.
After receiving applications, the quarantine agency will review documents and conduct on-site evaluations with animal rights advocacy groups to select suitable homes for the dogs over a two-month period, with the process set to be completed by late March.
The government plans to continue providing various support, including discounts on veterinary treatments, to ensure the retired detection dogs settle smoothly in their new homes.
Last year, six retired sniffer dogs were successfully adopted.
“We ask for attention and support to help the retired sniffer dogs who have dedicated themselves to the country begin a fresh life with new families,” a senior official from the agency said.
