SEOUL, Jun. 4 (Korea Bizwire)The South Korean Rural Development Administration (RDA) revealed yesterday that a firm that produces pet food from edible insects will be entering the domestic animal feed market.

The RDA will provide technological support so that the firm can eventually export its products.

Ptecticus, the insect to be used as the food source, is high in nutrients such as calcium and protein. The insect also helps suppress bacteria growth and can boost immunity levels in animals.

The RDA says that it will transfer technology to the firm allowing it to produce the insects year-round. On-site consultation sessions will also be offered to the firm.

An official at the RDA said that the firm, based in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, is currently developing premium pet food.

“The firm is currently selling premium pet food on Amazon and is planning to create pet food exclusively for Akita, a dog breed in Japan,” said the official.
