SEOUL, April 27 (Korea Bizwire)The government plans to provide support to stalking victims and their families even before they are directly harmed by stalking crimes.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family said Tuesday that a revision of the law concerning the prevention of stalking crime and the protection of victims had been passed by the Cabinet.

The revision cleared the way for the government to extend the scope of victims subject to the application of the law, to include not only those who are directly damaged by stalking crimes but also those who need preventive support.

Under the revision, those who cause harm or disadvantage to stalking victims or whistleblowers can be sentenced to imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to 30 million won (US$23,750).

The revision also laid the legal ground to prevent the suspension of studies caused by stalking crimes, including transfer to other schools.

The revision also stipulated that support center officials who violate the duty of keeping information confidential and stalkers who resist or refrain from on-site investigations can be sentenced to imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to 10 million won.

The revision also laid the foundation for the state or municipal governments to pursue policies to prevent stalking crimes and protect victims.
