SEOUL, Jan. 10 (Korea Bizwire) — The government said Friday it will provide an initial allowance of 3 million won (US$2,057) to the families of the Jeju Air plane crash victims.
Acting Interior Minister Ko Ki-dong said during a meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters that the “emergency living expense allowance” will be given the same day though the public fundraising period has not ended yet.
“Emergency care is being provided flexibly by increasing the limit and scope of support in a way that helps (the families) according to their individual circumstances,” Ko said. “We are keeping the assigned public servants designated per family and providing support by carefully identifying what is needed.”
South Korea and the United States began extracting data from the crashed plane’s flight data recorder Thursday, and a thorough investigation will be carried out into the cause of the crash under the principles of objectivity, fairness and transparency, he said.
Ko also said the government completed a special inspection of flight safety facilities at 13 airports across the country, with an analysis of the results under way, and instructed all 11 domestic airlines to assign experienced pilots to flights headed to airports where localizers have been raised on mounds.
A mound-like concrete structure at the international airport in Muan, southwestern South Korea, has been cited as a key cause for the deadly crash that killed all but two of the 181 people on board on Dec. 29.
