SEOUL, July 1 (Korea Bizwire)Government data on food nutritional information such as carbohydrates and fat will be open to the public.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced that it had set up an integrated database of food nutrition information by standardizing the data dispersed throughout ministries and agencies, with the database open to the public through the public data portal as of Wednesday.

The database contains information on 24 types of nutritional information for 46,000 foods, including 2,200 raw ingredients such as agro-fishery products and 42,600 processed foods.

The nutritional information includes data on energy, carbohydrates, protein, fat, sugar, total dietary fiber and cholesterol.

The government also plans to add 14,000 more data records by the end of this year through the arrangement of food codes.

In recent days, nutrition data has been widely used in services for the digital health and food-tech industries. However, it wasn’t easy to develop integrated access and utilization of such data since databases are managed by a variety of government ministries and agencies.

Against this backdrop, the government pursued data standardization by forming a public-private consultative body after authorities, including the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, signed a business agreement in June 2021.
