SEOUL, Nov. 19 (Korea Bizwire)The South Korean central government has joined hands with municipal governments, private companies and industrial associations to promote the activation of autonomous driving services through the standardization of self-driving data.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy signed a business agreement for the development and promotion of autonomous driving data standards, including the establishment of the ‘K-Alliance.’

Among the parties that signed the agreement are the Seoul Metropolitan City Government, four municipal governments that run test-beds for autonomous car research, and seven private companies and industrial associations, including Hyundai Motor Co. and the Korean Standards Association.

To ensure that each municipal government’s test-bed projects lead to the invigoration of nationwide self-driving services, it’s imperative to assure the compatibility of autonomous driving data by setting up a national standard.

Based on such judgment, the ministry decided to push for the establishment of the K-Alliance.

Under terms of the agreement, the ministry and the Korean Standards Association will set up a standardization committee that will be made up of industrial experts, aimed at supporting the development, enactment and distribution of self-driving data standards.

Municipal governments will provide the data they collect from test-beds, while playing the role of applying and verifying the national standards through test-beds to secure the reliability of these standards.

Hyundai Motor will present the area of data that needs to be standardized, while using the data provided by the municipal government’s test-beds for the development of autonomous cars.
