GOYANG, July 20 (Korea Bizwire) — The city government of Goyang, just northwest of Seoul, said Wednesday it is studying exemplary cases to establish a waste incineration facility that will also function as a regional landmark.
The plan involves creating a Resource Green Energy Park with a daily incineration capacity of 630 tons, aiming to complete it before the ban on direct landfilling of household waste takes effect in 2026.
Recently, the city invited applications for candidate sites, and 13 applications were received.
The site selection committee, consisting of experts, city council members, and residents, will evaluate economic viability, vehicle access, and public opinion to choose the optimal site by April of next year.
The new incineration facility will be constructed underground to prevent pollutant emissions. Above ground, there will be additional amenities such as a swimming pool, gym, library, observatory, as well as commercial and cultural facilities.
The city government intends to rigorously manage the incineration facility by elevating the standards for pollutant emissions, including nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide, to the highest international level.
