SEOUL, Dec.23 (Korea Bizwire)A Christmas tree with lights powered by a bicycle ‘generator’ has been set up in Seoul Square.

A book tree made out of 800 donated books now stands at the Songpa-gu Office, and a ‘recycled tree’ made out of 588 recycled plastic boxes is drawing attention at the Gangdong-gu Office.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has announced that an increasing number of companies, public institutions and religious groups are participating in its ‘Green Christmas Campaign’, promoting reduced energy consumption and sharing with those in need.

Seoul has also designated a ‘Family Day’ to encourage people to leave work on time, and since its ‘Happy Lights Off’ campaign that promotes turning off office lights after hours was launched in 2013, companies have joined the cause, with a total of 2,349 now participating. Lotte Food in Yeongdeungpo-gu and Paldo in Seocho-gu are some of the participants.

Authorities from the Seoul Metropolitan Government commented that through the Green Christmas campaign, they hope to promote the spirit of Christmas while reducing the use of energy. They also expressed hope that the Green Christmas and Happy Lights Off campaigns will continue to be adopted by businesses in Seoul.
