SEOUL, March 23 (Korea Bizwire) — GS Retail Co., operator of convenience store chain GS25, said Monday it will introduce food waste decomposers to achieve its goal of ‘zero food waste’.
Unlike ordinary food waste disposers that produce effluents and other unnecessary byproducts or ‘dryers’ that use dehydration methods to minimize food waste, these decomposers can reduce the bulk of food waste by 99 percent.
GS Retail joined hands with local waste decomposer manufacturer SoonPoongGa Co. in February to work on introducing the food waste decomposer.
They have recently completed pilot tests at company-run stores, and plan to conduct additional tests at 10 franchise stores.
The tests showed that 95 percent of food waste has been reduced, halving the cost of processing food waste.
“Once the decomposers are introduced at all stores, more than 30,000 liters of food waste will be processed in an eco-friendly manner each day,” said GS25.
