SEOUL, Feb. 9 (Korea Bizwire)Guatemala has sent a word of appreciation to the South Korean government for setting a foundation for turning lands devastated by climate change into forests, South Korea’s overseas aid agency said Tuesday.

“We’d like to thank the South Korean government for their support in recovering the forests in Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz and Peten,” said Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food of Guatemala Jose Angel Lopez, according to the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

“In the past, participation of farmers had been low despite the improved subsidies for environmental preservation. Now, the participation levels have struck a new high such that the forestry service has to actively secure funding every year. It’s all thanks to KOICA.”

KOICA, along with the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has invested US$7 million since 2018 to recover forests in Guatemala. So far, more than 4,311 hectares of forest have been recovered.
